Volunteer Orientation Updates: New Training Modules for 2025

Our volunteers are the backbone of our programs, and this year, we’re enhancing our orientation to equip you with deeper skills, knowledge, and confidence. Learn about the new training modules launching this spring!

Why the Update?

Feedback from past volunteers and staff highlighted opportunities to:

  • Strengthen understanding of neurodiversity and inclusion.
  • Provide practical de-escalation and emergency-response skills.
  • Foster a cohesive volunteer community through peer mentoring.

New Module Overview

  1. Neurodiversity Foundations (2 hrs)
    • Overview of autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and social-emotional challenges
    • Interactive case studies and Q&A
  2. Restorative Practices 101 (1.5 hrs)
    • Circle formats, facilitation protocols, and conflict resolution
    • Role-play scenarios customized to camp and retreat contexts
  3. Advanced De-escalation & Safety (2 hrs)
    • Verbal de-escalation techniques, boundaries, and non-violent crisis intervention basics
    • Hands-on practice with scenario-based drills
  4. Cultural Competency & Inclusive Language (1 hr)
    • Understanding bias, microaggressions, and culturally responsive communication
    • Language do’s and don’ts for affirming all identities
  5. Peer Mentor Lab (Optional, 1 hr)
    • Connect experienced volunteers with newcomers for shadowing and support
    • Goal-setting for camp session leadership roles

Scheduling & Delivery

  • Format: All core modules are now available via our new Learning Hub (LMS)—complete at your own pace before arrival. In-person and live-virtual check-ins will reinforce key concepts.
  • Completion Deadline: At least one week before your first volunteer day.
  • Certificates: Digital badges and completion certificates that count toward continuing-education credits.
